Chinese panel makers supply 60 percent of Samsung’s LCD panels

On June 26th, market research firm Omdia revealed that Samsung Electronics plans to purchase a total of 38 million LCD TV panels this year. Although this is higher than the 34.2 million units purchased last year, it is lower than the 47.5 million units in 2020 and 47.8 million units in 2021 by approximately 10 million units.

Based on estimations, Chinese mainland panel manufacturers such as CSOT (26%), HKC (21%), BOE (11%), and CHOT (Rainbow Optoelectronics, 2%) account for 60% of Samsung Electronics' LCD TV panel supply this year. These four companies supplied 46% of LCD TV panels to Samsung Electronics in 2020, which increased to 54% in 2021. It is expected to reach 52% in 2022 and rise to 60% this year. Samsung Electronics exited the LCD business last year, leading to an increasing supply share from Chinese mainland panel manufacturers like CSOT and BOE.

Among Samsung Electronics' LCD TV panel purchases this year, CSOT has the highest share at 26%. CSOT has been in the top position since 2021, with its market share increasing to 20% in 2021, 22% in 2022, and expected to reach 26% in 2023.

Next is HKC with a 21% share. HKC mainly provides low-cost LCD TV panels to Samsung Electronics. HKC's market share in Samsung Electronics' LCD TV panel market increased from 11% in 2020 to 15% in 2021, 18% in 2022, and 21% in 2023.

Sharp had a market share of only 2% in 2020, which increased to 9% in 2021, 8% in 2022, and expected to reach 12% in 2023. It has consistently remained around 10% in the past three years.

LG Display's share was 1% in 2020 and 2% in 2021, but it is expected to reach 10% in 2022 and 8% this year.

BOE's share increased from 11% in 2020 to 17% in 2021, but it dropped to 9% in 2022 and is expected to reach 11% in 2023.
